Mounts and Fittings

Everything around the blade is other specialists' work. A hand-fitted metal collar (habaki) made by its own artisan seats the blade in the scabbard so the polished steel touches nothing. Blades rest in a plain magnolia-wood shirasaya for storage and dress in a koshirae for wear: a lacquered scabbard, a hilt built from magnolia, ray skin, and silk wrap, retained on the tang by a single bamboo peg, plus a guard and metal fittings that constitute an art-collecting field of their own. Care is conservation: the enemy is moisture and fingerprints, the routine is a light oil film and never touching bare steel, and the etiquette around handling blades is safety and preservation encoded as manners.

Practitioner

The first fitting is the one newcomers overlook: the habaki, the small metal collar around the blade’s base. A specialist (shiroganeshi) hand-forms it — usually copper, often gold-foiled or silvered — to fit this one blade to a press fit. It does three jobs: wedges the sword shut in its scabbard so it can’t rattle or slide free, suspends the polished blade inside the scabbard so the steel touches wood nowhere else, and takes the wear of ten thousand draws. No habaki, no functioning sword; a new habaki is the first thing a restored blade gets after polish.

A blade then lives in one of two homes. The shirasaya — “white scabbard” — is plain, unlacquered magnolia (honoki: soft, resin-poor, kind to steel), a storage mount with no guard and no wrap. It’s glued with rice paste along its seam precisely so it can be split open and cleaned out — a scabbard’s interior eventually collects dust and old oil, which scratch. The koshirae is the dressed mount for wearing and display: the same magnolia core lacquered weatherproof, plus hilt furniture. A blade historically commuted — shirasaya at rest, koshirae on duty; serious collections still work that way, with empty koshirae kept on wooden blade-shaped stand-ins (tsunagi).

The hilt (tsuka) is a small marvel of composite engineering: a two-piece magnolia core carved to the tang’s exact profile, skinned in ray skin (samegawa — hard nodules that grip), then wrapped in silk or cotton tape in tensioned diamond patterns (tsukamaki, its own sub-profession), with small metal ornaments (menuki) bound under the wrap where the palm falls. The whole assembly is retained by one bamboo peg (mekugi) through tang and hilt. One peg sounds alarming; in fact the tapered tang wedges deep into the fitted wooden core — the peg mostly prevents withdrawal, loaded in shear across the grain of smoked bamboo, and it’s deliberately the cheap, replaceable fuse in the system. You check it every time you handle the sword; that’s the whole safety inspection.

The metalwork — guard (tsuba), pommel and collar (kashira, fuchi), menuki — long ago became an art field of its own (tōsōgu), with schools, signed masters, museum departments, and papers issued for fittings alone. The spectrum runs from austere pierced-iron guards of warrior taste to painterly gold-and-shakudō confections of Edo peace. This hub points rather than covers: know that a “sword” at auction is sometimes really a fittings collection with a blade in it, and budget attention accordingly.

Finally, care — where every owner touches the craft. The enemies are moisture and salt: a fingerprint on polished steel etches a permanent print in days. So bare steel is never touched; the blade is handled by tang and habaki, rested on cloth, and wiped with a lightly oiled soft cloth (traditional choice: chōji, mineral-based clove-scented oil) in a film almost too thin to see. The traditional powder ball (uchiko — actually fine polishing-stone dust) burnishes old oil off, but modern conservation advice uses it sparingly or not at all on healthy polish: it is a mild abrasive, and microfiber plus fresh oil does the job without spending steel. The handling etiquette you’ll encounter — announce before drawing, edge toward yourself when passing… hilt first, never speak over bare steel — reads as ceremony and functions as engineering: every rule keeps breath, fingers, and gravity away from an irreplaceable polished surface.

Expert pointers

The supply chains are the story: honoki must season for years; good samegawa is import-restricted; urushi lacquer work and tsukamaki have few full-time practitioners; and habaki-making — one of the last skills standing between a papered blade and a usable sword — is down to a small number of masters, several outside Japan. Fittings scholarship is deep and separate (start with the major schools: Gotō for formal soft-metal work, Higo and Akasaka for iron guards); and there’s a quiet debate about restoration versus originality — a period koshirae in worn condition may be worth more untouched than refreshed, exactly parallel to the polish-conservation argument.

Misconceptions

  • “One bamboo peg holding the blade is a design flaw.” The peg is the retainer, not the structure — the fitted wooden core carries the load, and bamboo in shear across the grain is remarkably strong. It’s also the system’s designed sacrificial part: inspectable in seconds, replaceable for pennies. Modern practice swords add a second peg mostly for liability, not physics.
  • “The shirasaya is the cheap mount, the koshirae the proper one.” They’re different tools: shirasaya is the conservation vessel (breathable wood, cleanable seam), koshirae the presentation one (sealed lacquer, hardware). Long-term storage in a koshirae is actually the worse choice for the steel.
  • “Uchiko powder is how you’re supposed to care for a blade.” It’s a legacy technique from an era of maintenance-by-abrasion. On a modern high-grade polish, routine uchiko slowly erases the polisher’s finish work; most current professionals recommend oil-and-cloth care and leaving abrasives to the togishi.

Check yourself

  1. Trace what actually holds a mounted blade rigid: which parts bear load, which merely retain, and why does the system put its cheapest component at the failure point?
  2. A collector stores a freshly polished blade oiled, in a lacquered koshirae, in a sealed display case. Predict the condition problems in five years and redesign the storage.

Specify a full koshirae for a blade you’d commission (~40 minutes, paper only): pick the blade (era-style, length — reuse your sugata work from Geometry and Construction), then decide scabbard finish, guard school and material, fuchi-kashira theme, menuki subject, wrap style and color — with one sentence per choice justifying it historically or functionally.
